Hot-stuff webapp development collective 37Signals launch a new affiliate program to help improve business and allow affiliates to make money. Ka-ching!

I mention this only because my thoughts on affiliate programs are mixed. In theory, and if done well, it’s a great idea: people who love your product encourage more people to use/buy/subscribe to it. Everyone’s a winner.

The downside, though, is that people who’ve never used your product see the affiliate program as a chance to make a cheap buck, and the web gets flooded with more of those stupid ads like the ones for eBay that appear randomly alongside Google searches: “everything Miles Davis and more, on eBay”.

I’m not having a moan here: it’s not that I disagree with affiliate programs per se, it’s just that I hate to see them go bad. Bad affiliates = bad web junk = bad experience for all of us. I do think 37signals will probably do a pretty good job of keeping things real, though. Stay tuned and you might see some affiliate links right here ;)
